If I was a Rich Girl...
This has been a hard week. Ask any teacher. For some of us, it has been the worst week we've had in education ever. No one has any answers to any questions. No one knows if what we are doing is right or wrong. No one is getting even close to the amount of support they need. I didn't even know what my students looked like until we took an outdoor mask break. All I had seen were their eyes.
My post last week is still valid. I'm still excited that we are starting school in person. I'm still excited to meet my new students and get to know them. I'm still excited to see last year's kiddos in the hallway and get back to collaborating with my amazing teacher team and support staff. But damn, it's been a hard week.
I could go on and on about the heartbreaking aspects of this week, but I don't know that I can emotionally afford to do that. So I'm going to use something that did happen in my classroom as a jumping off point.
My students were filling in their planners {and honestly, what was there to write?} I was trying to come up with something for them to put, and so I jokingly said "Your next assignment is to bring Miss Fink one million dollars." They giggled, and some of them pretended to write it. But one of my students asked what I would do with a million dollars...
How many times do we say that? If I won the lottery...If I were a millionaire...fill in the blanks.
But like, really. What would I do with a million dollars?
Time to have some fun!
{I'm going to leave off the things I am going to consider "obvious," at least for me, such as paying off debts, supporting charities, and helping out family and friends...let's just focus on the "frivolous" stuff}
Buy a Lake House in Door County
Obviously, number one on the list. Get myself a beautiful house {doesn't have to be huge} with a gorgeous view, and then I can escape to DC whenever I want! The bay side would be preferable, because the water tends to be calmer, but I'm not going to be picky, as long as it's on the water.
Go on an Insane Vacation
I'm talking a nonstop European tour, jaunts to Australia and New Zealand, an extended stay in Hawaii, an Alaskan cruise, some time in Canada, a stop-off in Egypt, and a journey through Asia. Plus more continental US destinations, Central and South America...maybe Antarctica? I'm going to all of the places! And you'd better believe I'm sleeping in a castle at one point.
Build a Massive Library
I'll just add this on to my lake house. No problem. And then I get to buy books to fill the shelves!
Buy an English Cottage
Okay, I've got a summer home up in DC. Now I need another destination abode. How lovely would this be? Just spending my time reading and tending my garden, biking to the village and taking long walks in the countryside... *sigh*
Attend an Amazing Event
I'm very much aware that this is very much not an option in our current world. Neither is the travel, to be honest. But if I had a million dollars, you know I'd be catching an amazing show on Broadway or in the West End {and I'd have fantastic seats}. I'd be going to the Jane Austen festival in Bath or maybe the Super Bowl {this really depends on who's playing}.
So, to pass on my student's question, what would you do with a million dollars? We may as well have fun fantasizing since the odds of this happening to many of us {at least to me} are quite small. Infinitesimal. Nearly non-existent. But hey, I can dream, can't I?
